FAQ
Will Microsoft still support my Windows Servers if I
use XenServer to virtualize them?
Yes. XenServer 5 is the first server virtualization platform to be
validated for both AMD and Intel 32-bit and 64-bit systems through Microsoft’s
Server Virtualization Validated Program (SVVP). This program enables Citrix and
other software providers to test and validate their virtualization software to
run Windows Server 2008 and previous versions of Windows Server. Under this
program, Microsoft offers cooperative technical support to customers running
Windows Server and select Microsoft server applications on validated,
non-Microsoft server virtualization software, such as XenServer 5.
Will I have to re-build my servers if I decide to virtualize them? Will I have to re-install everything?
No. XenServer™ now includes a tool called XenConvert™ which provides Physical to Virtual (P2V) conversion so you do not have to re-build your servers or re-install all of your programs.
Should I use Citrix Essentials for XenServer or Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V? How do I choose?
If you plan on a broad, homogeneous deployment of Hyper-V for virtualization of Windows workloads, for example, Hyper-V with Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V is a good choice. If you are seeking to optimize the virtualization of both Windows and Linux workloads, or have high performance requirements, Citrix Essentials for XenServer may be a better choice. If you expect to have a mix of XenServer and Hyper-V in your environment, you should select Essentials for XenServer as it entitles you to manage any mix of XenServer and Hyper-V.
Ultimately, you can choose the underlying virtualization platform depending on the mix of applications and workloads, and Citrix will provide the advanced management capabilities for both platforms.
