Will Microsoft still support my Windows Servers if I use XenServer to virtualize them?
Yes. XenServer 5 is the first server virtualization platform to be validated for both AMD and Intel 32-bit and 64-bit systems through Microsoft’s Server Virtualization Validated Program (SVVP). This program enables Citrix and other software providers to test and validate their virtualization software to run Windows Server 2008 and previous versions of Windows Server. Under this program, Microsoft offers cooperative technical support to customers running Windows Server and select Microsoft server applications on validated, non-Microsoft server virtualization software, such as XenServer 5.
Will I have to re-build my servers if I decide to virtualize them? Will I have to re-install everything?
No. XenServer™ now includes a tool called XenConvert™ which provides Physical to Virtual (P2V) conversion so you do not have to re-build your servers or re-install all of your programs.
What happened to XenServer Standard Edition?
XenServer Standard Edition is now Free! You can download and start using it today for no cost!
If you purchased XenServer Standard Edition before February 23, 2009 you are entitled to a free upgrade to Citrix Essentials for XenServer Enterprise Edition.
Is the no cost XenServer fully supported by Citrix?
Absolutely. Customers may purchase Citrix support for XenServer just as they do with any other Citrix product.
Can I use the no cost XenServer in my production environment?
Yes, this product has been designed for production usage and is fully supported by Citrix. The inclusion of multi-server management, shared storage, resource pools, and XenMotion live migration make this an excellent enterprise class, cloud-proven virtualization platform. Over time, as your production needs grow, you can add some of the more advanced features in the Citrix Essentials product line. The most notable features from Essentials you will probably want to add as the scale of your XenServer deployment grows are High Availability and StorageLink, which are not included in the free XenServer offering.
