Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses (RDS CALs)

Formerly known as Terminal Services Client Access Licenses (TS CALs ), these licenses allow connected computers to call for the launch of a published desktop (explorer.exe) or multiple instance of an application’s executable on the server. RDS CALs are installed on the server to allow for access through Terminal Services (RDP Protocol) and will often accompany an equal number Citrix XenApp Licenses (ICA Protocol) as the two types are required to work in combination. The new naming convention released with Server 2008 (RDS), is backwards compatible for continued support of Server 2000 and Server 2003.

Microsoft Open Licensing Program (MOLP)

• All new customers to MOLP must purchase a minimum of 5 licenses to qualify.
• Existing MOLP customers may purchase licenses one at a time. You will be asked for your MS Authorization Number.
• Please specify PER USER or PER DEVICE in the special notes section of the order window.
• Licenses are delivered electronically through email within 24 to 48 hours (business days only).

What is Software Assurance?

Software Assurance gives you the right, for 2 years, to upgrade your licenses to use with the next Operating System version after Server 2008. Licenses purchased without software assurance can be used on Server 2000, Server 2003, or Server 2008 only.

Per User or Per Device?

Server 2003 and Server 2008 licensing can be per user or per device (Server 2000 is per device only). Per device is the default option and it is good for users that will share computers or shift workers. Per user is good for roaming users that may use different computers and is the preferred option for the majority of present day scenarios.
