What are Server CALS and RDS CALs?

Server Client Access Licenses (Server CALs or Windows CALs) allow connected computers to access the features of the server operating system such as file storage, printing services, and system tools. Windows Server CALs are kept for audit purposes and are not installed on the server. Windows Server CALs usually come bundled with the Server Operating System.

Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses (RDS CALs) formerly Terminal Services Client Access Licenses (TS CALs)allow connected computers to call for the launch of a published desktop or multiple instance of an application’s executable. TS CALs are installed on the server to allow for remote access through Terminal Services.

Note: To be compliant with Microsoft Licensing Rules for Remote Desktop Services, each user or each device on the network must have 1 Server CAL and 1 RDS CAL to access Remote Desktop Services.

What is Software Assurance?

Software Assurance gives you the right, for 2 years, to upgrade your licenses to use with the next Operating System version after Server 2008. Licenses purchased without software assurance can be used on Server 2000, Server 2003, or Server 2008 only.

Per User or Per Device?

Server 2003 and Server 2008 licensing can be per user or per device (Server 2000 is per device only). Per device is the default option and it is good for users that will share computers or shift workers. Per user is good for roaming users that will use many different computers.
